We have had a busy start to first grade! We have done so much in the past few weeks and I am really getting to know the kids!
A few things we've done so far...
We went on an Owl Hunt! We searched our school for owl clues. Each clue lead us to a new part of the school where we learned the rules and people who work there. The clues lead us to the library where we met Miss Lee, the Clinic where the kids got to see Mrs. Petrie and her office, the gym, art, music, Mr. Henry's office...those owls took us EVERYWHERE! It wasn't until we got back to our classroom that we found the Owls! Owl Cookies that is!
The kids enjoyed a nice treat and we talked about our school!
In math we have been working on patterns. We have talked about what makes something a pattern, how patterns repeat, identifying patters, and extending patterns. The firsties used pattern blocks to make different types of patterns with their group!
In science, we have learned about using our 5 senses, especially as we investigate! We talked about what makes a scientist and the importance of asking questions! When we learned about our sense of smell, each child used their nose to smell the object in the container. They then had to predict what it was! We have a lot of great guesses and a lot that got it correct! As a majority, the class did not like the smell of garlic! I thought it was quite funny!
In writing, we are starting our Writers Workshop routines. We talked about what types of things writers write about and why. The kids thought about different things they LOVE to write about. They put those things in their "heart" and will refer to that when they need a new idea! I love seeing what the kids feel is in their "heart". Families, pets, friends, teachers, VOE! Great ideas! This heart will stay in their writers workshop folder all year!
I hope your child has a had a fun start to the year! Can you believe it is already mid SEPTEMBER?!? WOW!
